Grease trap cleaning for busy kitchens

Your grease trap catches fats, oils and grease before they reach the sewer or your septic system. Keep it pumped and it quietly does its job — leave it and you get odours, blockages and compliance headaches.

What a clean involves

All of it out. Not just the top.

We pump out the whole trap — floating grease, settled solids and the liquid in between — then check its condition so small problems are caught before they become expensive ones.

  • Full pump-out of grease, solids and liquid
  • Condition check of the trap at every service
  • Waste removed as controlled waste for licensed disposal
  • Detailed records of our work to help with compliance
  • Routine schedules — plus emergency cleans for spills and backups

Grease trap check

Is your trap past the 30% line?

Lift the lid, take a look (or ask whoever did the last clean) and slide the layers to match. Add your permit cycle to see your next pump-out dates.

40%Over 30% — pump it out

As a share of the trap's effective (liquid) depth. Water Corporation requires a pump-out once floating and settled solids together exceed 30%.

    Staying compliant

Sewer or septic, the trap still has to be looked after

    On the sewer

    • Water Corporation sets your pump-out frequency in your trade waste permit.
    • Pump out early if grease and solids pass 30% of the trap's depth.
    • Use a licensed liquid waste contractor and keep records of every pump-out.
    • Expanding the business? Ask Water Corporation to review the frequency.

    On a septic or ATU

    • The Shire of Chittering has no reticulated sewer, so kitchens there drain to an on-site system.
    • Grease that gets past the trap ends up in the tank and the leach drains — expensive to fix.
    • Check your local government's requirements with its environmental health team.
    • We look after the trap, the septic and the leach drains — one truck, one call.

    FAQ

    Questions we get asked

Straight answers. Still unsure? Give us a ring — we're happy to talk it through.

How often does my grease trap need cleaning?

If you're on sewer, Water Corporation sets your pump-out frequency (in weeks) as a condition of your trade waste permit, based on the trap's size and your wastewater. It also requires a pump-out whenever floating grease and settled solids together exceed 30% of the trap's effective depth. Tell us your cycle and we'll keep you on it.

    Isn't skimming the top enough?

Not for a proper clean. We pump out the full contents — the floating grease, the settled solids and the liquid in between — so the trap is back to full working capacity.

Who's allowed to clean a grease trap?

Water Corporation says cleaning must be done by a licensed liquid waste contractor. We're licensed for controlled waste removal, and the waste is carted away for licensed disposal.

Do you do emergency grease trap cleans?

Yes. Most of our grease trap work is scheduled, but when a trap backs up or overflows we provide emergency cleans to get your kitchen back up and running quickly. Call 0429 933 407.

Do I need to keep records of pump-outs?

Yes — Water Corporation requires owners and operators to keep records of inspections, maintenance and pump-outs, and its staff may check them. We keep detailed records of our work and can provide documentation to back you up.

Can I use enzyme or bacterial additives instead?

Not without asking. Water Corporation requires prior approval for enzyme or biological additives in grease arrestors — talk to its Trade Waste team first.
